Our philosophy
From warehousing to shipping and packaging to shelf life – we explain how we try to make our processes, production and shipping as efficient and resource-saving as possible.
Sustainability at tags
Sustainability is a broad term that is often spontaneously associated with ecological aspects. But at Tags, we define sustainability differently: For us, it primarily means longevity and the preservation of tradition, craftsmanship, and culture.
Our choice of materials is deliberate and thoughtful – every material we use has its purpose and justification. Instead of following short-term trends, we create products that are both high-quality and durable, while also carrying a deeper meaning.
Durability as the core of sustainability
We focus on products that don't need constant replacement. Our espadrilles are durable, washable, and designed to last for years.
Preservation of crafts and culture
Our espadrilles are handcrafted in Mexico by artisans who practice an endangered craft. By supporting their work, we help preserve cultural heritage and centuries-old techniques.
Conscious choice of materials
- Robust and easy to care for : We use polyester instead of cotton because it is more durable and can withstand everyday use better.
- Washability : Our genuine shoe soles ensure that the espadrilles are not only comfortable but also easy to care for.
- Natural rubber : We are working to find a practical solution for the use of natural rubber – including reasonable, local access.
Packaging philosophy
We avoid unnecessary packaging in retail. Instead, we use a colorful hair tie as a label that can be reused after purchase.
For shipping, we rely on space-saving paper-based packaging, supplemented by a minimalist plastic shipping bag that offers maximum protection.
Our packaging is already as efficient as the new EU packaging regulation will require from 2030 onwards : Thanks to its flat shape, it contains hardly any empty space and saves valuable volume during shipping.

We are already meeting the future maximum empty space ratio of 50. % according to Article 24 of the new Packaging Ordinance (PPWR).

recycling
Recycle: "Tags 2 Dead
Reuse and return
With our Tags 2 Tote program, we take back old Tags shoes and recycle the fabric. Together with fabric scraps from production, we transform these materials into useful and durable shopping bags, which are sold in our shop.
The bags are made in social workshops in Germany, and a portion of the proceeds goes back to Mexico. In this way, we support the production and further training of local artisans and contribute to the preservation of this craft.
Reuse: "Tags 2 Flowerpot"
Instead of throwing away your worn-out Alpargatas tags, you can transform them into charming hanging flower pots! With a few simple steps, you can bring color and life to your garden or balcony.
Nail espadrilles to the wall – the shoes become a decorative plant bag.
Fill with soil – Nutrient-rich potting soil ensures ideal growth.
Sow seeds – We supply you with a selection of beautiful, colorful flower seeds.
Water & be amazed – soon your old shoe will grow into a little flower paradise!
This is sustainable, creative and unique – perfect for giving your tags a second bloom.

Camp philosophy
Warehousing: Less storage, more sustainability
We deliberately keep very little stock because we focus on sustainable production. Instead of producing large quantities for stock, we only manufacture what is actually needed. This has several advantages:
- Avoiding overproduction : By only producing what is in demand, we reduce material waste and unnecessary inventory.
- Reduced resource consumption : Less storage also means less energy and land consumption, which further minimizes our environmental impact.
- Flexibility and fairness : Through demand-driven production, we can respond fairly to changing market conditions and customer needs without disposing of surplus goods. Our sustainable approach to warehousing ensures that our products are manufactured in a targeted and responsible manner, without unnecessary waste or resource consumption.
Recycling isn't always green
Not everything that is recycled is automatically environmentally friendly. While recycling reduces waste, it often involves high energy and resource consumption. Large amounts of energy, electricity, and chemical additives are needed for processing and refining materials, often making the process economically unviable and ecologically damaging.
For us, sustainability therefore means creating durable products that don't need to be replaced quickly. By focusing on longevity, traditional craftsmanship, and efficient resource use, we reduce waste not only in the short term but also in the long term – and at the same time contribute to preserving cultural heritage and social responsibility.
Our espadrilles combine culture, quality and sustainable thinking – for less waste, more awareness and a more sustainable future.
PS:
It's important to remember that in Europe we take many things for granted that pose a challenge in other parts of the world. In Mexico, for example, people have to protect themselves from hurricanes for days at a time several times a year, without knowing whether their workshop will still be standing afterward. The supply of materials and electricity is also far less reliable there than it is here. Added to this are unpredictable factors such as a less dependable workforce and a generally less predictable business environment.
